FOREWORD:

My friend Michele Synegal is a healer. A woman who has been a widow for twenty-nine years of her adult life, Michele has been to the darkest places that none of us want to go and that many of us, nevertheless, find ourselves. The place where we stand alone without our husband, life-partner, soul mate, or better half. Standing in that place, we know no rewrite, revision, or magic wish will change what must be accepted. Yet, in that dark place, Michele eventually found, created, and opened herself to new dimensions of love that sprang from the soil of her grief and grieving.  As a result, she has healed and continues to recover every day. And in Widows Speak, she offers her lessons learned, hard-won wisdom, and compassionate advice for widows.  Death is a challenging, sometimes taboo subject because American society’s youth and beauty obsession and fear of acknowledging illness, loss, and death make the conversation about grief and grieving impossible. But Michele has found the words to hone a message that, while designed for African American widows, is relevant to anyone who has lost someone they loved.

This book is deeply personal as Michele shares the pain of her husband’s death and the continuing impact of his death on her and her
adult children, even as they all manage to thrive in ways that would make that husband and father proud. Widows Speak is a rich narrative as Michele dives into discussions of depression and the stages of grief, what to expect from the grief journey and how to go and grow gracefully through the phases.

The title of this book is appropriate because, on its pages, widows do speak. So often silenced, misunderstood, and marginalized, you will meet women with powerful stories of loss, evolution, and redemption on these pages. So, to my friend Michele Synegal, I thank you for a book for anyone and everyone who has ever loved somebody and lost somebody and had to find themselves. ~ Marita Golden, Author The Strong Black Woman How a Myth Endangers the Physical and Mental Health of Black Women
